I wound up watching the retreating end of last night's storm from somewhere reasonably high up in the Valley, and it was spectacular, even if it did leave an acquaintance of mine temporarily homeless (his apartment somehow flooded, despite being on the top floor of a 5 story complex).

So, my life has changed significantly since I last posted.
In a fit of sudden self worth, I quit my demeaning service monkey delicatessen job, and now have a slightly better one selling useless overpriced organisational goods to the middle and upper middle class; I put in a portfolio and application to study animation at QUT next year, and surprisingly enough, wasn't too crap to get in; and I'm going out with a charming (if slightly snarky) video games critic called Ben.
If this is what it's like to be vaguely competent at life, I think I might like it.
After my work shift yesterday, I've come to the conclusion that I really need a new job.
I say this because yesterday we had a few very busy patches, we were slightly understaffed for the entire evening, the fire alarm went off for the first time in 7 years (nobody was particularly thrilled to be standing around in the cold for 20 minutes, following an evacuation plan that noone could actually remember, then going back inside when the firefighters left), we were slightly behind on schedule from the lost evacuation time, when I started cleaning the back room oven, it UNLEASHED A CLOUD OF BOILING STEAM AND BURNED MY FACE.

That said, I'm ok now - the burns are fairly minor, so I just look a little sunburnt - but at the time, I looked like a third rate Batman villain.
In hindsight, I'm scared shitless. I was astoundingly lucky that it wasn't significantly worse. Hell, if it wasn't for my glasses, I'd probably have eye damage - that's what really leaves me shaky when I think about it.

It was swiftly chased off with a lot of yelling and brandishing of wooden swords, and Lucinda suffered no major injuries, but her right ear has been half shredded, and given her tendancy to run around, nuzzle against people and shake her head when seeking attention, a decent amount of blood got splattered over a truly impressive area.
My jeans, sadly, may never recover.

    <lj:music>The Lightning Seeds - Sense</lj:music>

As marvelously fun as swigging (something that strongly resembles nail polish remover in both smell and taste) straight from the bottle is as an aesthetic choice, I'm rapidly being reminded right now that it's certainly a short sighted choice.
In other words, oh god, oh god, why the fuck did I drink like that.

Oh, that's right, Eurovision. :)
I've come to realize my Eurovision drinking styles have followed a thematic progression across the last three years - Naievity And Optimism (commercially premixed 'candy drinks'), A Thin Veneer Of Pleasantness Over A Pustulant Ocean Of Rancid Disillusionment (personally mixed drinks, heavy on the 'drink'), and this year, The Bernard Black School Of Disillusionment (AKA Fuck It, I'm Drinking Straight From The Bottle).

My relentless bitching about the manner in which I delivered alcohol into my system aside, this years Eurovision was a definite improvement on the quality of performance delivered last year. Given the type of person I'm addressing here, I'll assume you've all watched it, and simple remind you of your own conclusions with a simple "well, wasn't that messed up in a fabulous and considerably sparkly way?". I also suggest you mosey on over to darcrider's livejournal - he doesn't have an entry on the topic up yet, but with the sheer quantity of notes he took on the weird shit we were all saying, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't put one up.

Niftyness also ensued in finally putting a face to a name - musical_bek2, it's lovely to meet you, and I look forward to chatting art with you whenever our paths cross. Also, buy fixative! Your free flowing gestural sketch style must be preserved!

If you're wondering about the subject line, darcrider referenced Martian Successor Nadesico at me in the car ride there, and I was abruptly reminded of how much my behavior's changed for the better in these last few years, even these last few months. More specifically, it's a relief to know that these days, if I'm loud, eccentric and attention grabbing, it's because I've chosen to do so, rather than spinning manically out of control. I seem to have completely rid myself of playing the cutesy moron as well, and for that I'm particularly thankful.

Anyway, hungover lecture attendance summons me, so I'll leave you with the music video for The Lightning Seeds - "Sense", because while the music video itself may not be very good, I adore this song, albeit slightly guiltily.
(I might just be a closet optimist. Shh, don't tell anyone.)

More coherent posts may follow, but for now, that is all.

I think I'm beginning to get the hang of my psyche (only took me two decades!).

My brain doesn't stop, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's always productive. Sans purpose, or at least something interesting to consider, the figurative wheels of my mind spin aimlessly against nothing, frustrating me and all those around me very soon after.
When my mind has nothing to push against, I become bored.
When I become bored, I rapidly become depressed.
When I'm depressed, I rapidly become nearly completely unable to instigate any activity that would result in a cessation of boredom - I doubt my own competence, I'm struck down with apathy and see anything I do as ultimately futile.
This tends to last until I find something to obsess over, and manage to work up a good sweat with some physical activity (usually in the form of crashing about the studio, pretending to be a depressed dryad with two pistols, and no, I'm not joking when I say that). At that point a sense of context returns to me with something of a startled thud.

Why am I writing this out? Mostly to remind myself of the cycle, and partially, to make other people aware of the cycle. I shouldn't need to rely on other people, as it's my own responsibility to be aware of myself, but I rather like the idea of giving other people the means of helping me, should I need it.

Oh, and Nick, you were right about what you said last Wednesday, but possibly not in the way you intended. Fuzzy thinking is still anathema to me, but I concede that maybe I should be letting people in a bit closer.

Hmm, I was going to say something about my Mad Science performance anxiety, but I think I'll save that until after I've watched House.

Some of you may be amused by this - I'm being flamed, or was flamed, by a rather enthusiastic young christian regarding my ever so slightly cliched Zombie Jesus picture from a few years ago.
http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/17106275/
I use the past tense because, while the conversation's still going, I've been trying to actually talk reasonably with the lass. Not really sure why, but I'm guessing I'm curious about how that kind of person thinks.
Anyway, I post because I think it's rather funny to that someone's screaming in capslock about how I disgust them, but also because I seek an opinion. How do you think I'm going so far?

And as oddly and seemingly nonsensically as it began, my computer once again works.
Thankyou, you wonderful people who helped me out or offered me help.

In honour of my triumphant and slightly bewildered return, I offer up youtube links! -
punk_rock_nerd put me on something of a DAAS and Paul McDermott spree (I'm surprised and impressed to discover that the man actually has talent).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-BGlQ1U6ek (Stick it out past the less than funny opening song.
Buggerfuckcuntarseshitbugger!
No sooner do I finally get internet access restored to the Dungeon when my beloved computer Max Planck decides to repeatedly commit suicide.
Any of you kind and knowledgeable tech monkeys want to give me some advice?

Max is repeatedly rebooting without warning when I try to start him up, generally a couple of minutes after I log into windows, and sooner if I immediately start up an application like iTunes. Given I'm not hearing anything particularly odd from the power supply and fan, my personal theory is that something's wrong with the ram, but of course, I'm likely very very wrong about that.

In other news, tomorrow I go in search of the ultimate in artist's anatomical reference figures - Spiderman. To be precise, an 18 inch high action figure with 63 points of articulation. Hopefully, I'll be able to find this thing in brisbane, if just to achieve my lifelong dream of owning a poseable inanimate object capable of flipping people off.
